My work begins with observation. Living in a rural environment means that birds are a constant presence moving through the landscape, appearing briefly and disappearing again.
I use my own photography to capture these moments as they happen. The photographs become a starting point rather than a final reference, allowing the paintings to move beyond documentation. Working in watercolour mostly, I explore the balance between realism and abstraction, using fluid washes, layered colour and expressive marks to convey movement, atmosphere and life.
In my Breath of Nature series, birds become a way of exploring the relationship between memory, place and observation. While a photograph records a single moment, painting allows that moment to shift and evolve, creating an interpretation shaped by both experience and feeling.
Through this process I hope to capture not only the form of the bird, but the sense of presence and connection found in everyday encounters with nature.
